Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these medications should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
